How to Plan Your Maine Oyster Trip

The Maine Oyster Trail does not book tours or schedule sales appointments. The purpose of the Trail is to help users plan their trips and connect to oyster businesses. Each business on the Trail has provided instructions and contact information to arrange tours, sales, and other experiences. Please refer to the details provided for each individual company in your itinerary. In most cases, you’ll need to reach out to the farmer via email, social media, or phone. A phone call is a great way to set up a farm tour, because the farmers can give you specific instructions on where to meet, where to park, and other key details.

In Maine we say, “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.” Weather conditions here can change quickly. Be sure to wear layers, waterproof and slip-resistant shoes (preferably close-toed). You may also wish to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, bug spray, and a life jacket (if the farm you’re visiting doesn’t provide them). Please be aware that some businesses may require face masks. For more guidance on safe and responsible Maine travel, please visit the Maine Office of Tourism website.

Each farm has a preferred order, payment, and pick up method. Please refer to your itinerary for information on how to order, pay for, and pick up oysters from individual businesses. In most cases, you’ll need to reach out to the farmer via email, social media, or phone call to order oysters.

Shipped oysters and third-party deliveries do not count as Trail activities. In order for your oyster purchase to count, oysters must be purchased in-person, directly from a farmer. Local pickup as well as local deliveries from the farms themselves can earn you a check-in with that business.

When you set up your oyster passport, you’ll be able to use your mobile device to “check-in” to various locations along the Trail. Each business participating in the Trail will have a unique 4-digit code that you can enter to verify your visit. These check-ins add up to earn you rewards.
